When the Lights Go Out, It Crawls

The power outage was sudden every light in the neighborhood snapping off at once, plunging the streets into total darkness. I grabbed my flashlight, but the beam barely cut through the blackness. That’s when I heard it  a slow, wet scraping sound, coming from just outside my door. I froze, heart pounding, as something heavy and unseen began moving closer, dragging itself along the floor.

I dared not look, but the noise grew louder, more deliberate, as if whatever it was enjoyed the fear it was causing. The seconds stretched into minutes, and I knew one thing when the lights go out, it crawls. And it was hunting me. Shutdown123
